Vorige keer lieten we een sceptische achttienjarige achter op weg naar Italië. In Assisi struikelt hij over een standbeeld met duiven — en over een herinnering die zijn verstand niet kan plaatsen. Dertig jaar later weet hij nog altijd niet zeker wat er gebeurde. Maar het zette iets in gang dat niet meer te stoppen was.
Elke zondag staan er nieuwe gezichten in de kerkzaal, en de meesten komen niet terug. Niet omdat geloven moeilijk is, maar om een andere reden. Over kerk als middel, niet als doel, over wat individualisme ons kost, en over het lichaam van Christus als antwoord op een leegte die veel verder reikt dan religie alleen.
God hoort elk gebed, maar het antwoord komt zelden zoals je verwacht. Vier redenen waarom de stilte na een gebed niet betekent dat er niemand luistert, met schriftverwijzingen die elk punt onderbouwen.
Etienne Vermeersch trad als jonge man in bij de jezuïeten en liet de kerk achter met een godsbeeld dat geen ruimte liet voor zijn eigen scherpste vragen. Slavernij in de heilige teksten en het probleem van het kwaad blijven binnen dat godsbeeld onoplosbaar. Het herstelde evangelie vertrekt van andere uitgangspunten: keuzevrijheid die even oud is als God, en tegenstelling als voorwaarde voor een wereld waarin groei en liefde mogelijk zijn.
Wetenschap meet, maar waardeert niet – en toch vlucht het abortusdebat vaak in feiten en meerderheden in plaats van in morele vragen. Geloof hoort wél aan tafel, mits het spreekt met redenen en niet met gezag. Alleen zo kunnen we de diepste vraag onder ogen zien: wat is een mens waard?
Rond euthanasie vallen telkens dezelfde twee woorden: moedig en verstandig. Maar wie zegt dat de moed altijd aan die kant van de tafel ligt? Ik pleit er voor om ook wie blijft vechten en blijft leven moedig te durven noemen, zonder iemand anders in een hoekje te plaatsen.
Julien De Wit schreef een intelligent boek over veerkracht en heruitvinding in crisistijd. Het klopt bijna. Maar er ontbreekt iets essentieels — en dat gemis is precies de blinde vlek van onze tijd.
