Another question that I am occasionally asked is about our โmagic underwearโ. Anyone who googles โMormonsโ will come across this from time to time and it always arouses curiosity enormously. Especially when one notices that most Mormons are reluctant to talk about this. A frequently heard explanation is โthis is sacred to us, that's why we don't talk about it muchโ or even better in Englishย โThis is sacred, but not a secretโ.

That's why I think it's great that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has now put a video online that puts the finishing touches on it. It's not secretive, but we just ask that it be discussed with respect. Every faith has its symbols. Pastors wear chasubles, nuns wear habits, Buddhist monks their saffron robes, Jews their yarmulke... Religion and symbols are inextricably linked.
Mormons wear their symbols close to the body, invisible to the outside world. As a sign of an intimate and intimate bond with God.
It's certainly not magical either. We believe that wearing these robes protects us from harm because they symbolize our faithfulness to the covenants we have made with Heavenly Father and we receive protection in return. Faith can move mountains and as a result, there are people who may take the mundane too far and say that underwear effectively magically protects them from illness and accidents.
I personally believe that it is a symbol and that it is not the robe itself that provides protection, but our faith and faithfulness that can protect us, literally itself if necessary. Is that crazy? Everyone will say that anyone who emerges unscathed from a terrible accident has a good guardian angel. That guardian angel is as magical as our robes.
And speaking of our religious symbols, this video also shows the robes we wear in our temples. Are they weird? No more or less than the tiaras and chasubles that the Pope wears, so to speak.
They are a symbol based on the symbols we find in the Bible. Our church is a restored church, so we return to the symbols that God himself revealed of old. And because we don't wear them visibly in the outside world, they become likeย weird considered.
So the next time you talk to Mormons about their robes, don't derisively call them our magic underwear. We like to respect everyone's opinion and we enjoy it when someone shows the same respect for our heritage by using the correct term: our temple garments and the garment of the holy priesthood. Respect comes through understanding and that is why I am happy that we can simply pass this on and show this video.
