I was shocked today. I had driven to UZ Leuven to visit someone who had been urgently admitted there and I wanted to give her an anointing and blessing to strengthen her. I had arrived there outside normal visiting hours, but I thought “an anointing can become urgent if something suddenly goes wrong, so I would really like to do that now”. But to my dismay, I had to conclude that this was possible for a Catholic priest, Jewish rabbi or imam.
Ministers of recognized religions are always allowed to visit and support patients. I can understand that sometimes in a hospital, people might raise an eyebrow upon hearing names of lesser-known religions, such as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Because I believe it is a constitutional right to practice your faith as you wish, I think it would not be a bad idea for a Mormon to always carry something that clearly shows that in times of need you want to receive support through an anointing with consecrated oil.
That's why this afternoon I thought about it and made a card, on which you can, for example, write your bishop's mobile number. I will certainly get such a card Mormon Accident Assistance print and keep with my identity card. I can only hope that in all hospitals people are not as short-sighted as in UZ Leuven and respect the request on the card.
