Life is sometimes messy. We're all just doing our best, searching for meaning and connection without having received a ready-made manual for it. That is the honest approach of Inneke Plasschaert for her new video series 'Among Us'. I considered it a privilege to discuss with her for the very first episode of this series in our church in Sint-Niklaas.
Why this conversation?
Inneke started this series out of genuine curiosity. She visits communities that often keep to themselves and are sometimes viewed with prejudice by the outside world. She wants to discover how others find that connection and meaning and what we can learn from each other. As she herself says: 'I'm curious about how others do that. Finding that meaning, that understanding. That connection. In search of answers, I visited groups about which little is generally known.'
I am incredibly grateful to Inneke for this invitation. It gave me the opportunity to calmly and openly explain what we, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, truly believe in.
From 'how' to 'why'
In the video, we talk about my personal quest. As a computer engineer, I always wanted to know how things worked, but science didn't give me an answer to the question why we are here. In this conversation, I explain why I consciously chose this church in 2011 and how this faith helps me to give meaning to both the beautiful and difficult moments in life – such as raising my children with autism.
We are talking about:
- The restored church: Why this faith feels like a ‘complete package’ to me.
- Growth through headwinds: How setbacks can help us become better people.
- The moral compass: Why Christ points the way for me in a chaotic world.

I hope this conversation contributes to more mutual understanding and perhaps even offers a piece of inspiration for your own quest.
